How to Boost Your Gut Health Today

Gut health has gotten more buzz recently because of talk in the media including probiotics and leaky gut. This article will discuss 5 simple ways to improve your gut health today. 

Gut health is the foundation of a healthy body.

There are many simple, easy ways to boost your gut health to have a positive impact on your mind-body health. 

What is the gut? 

The gut, also known as our digestive system, goes all the way from our mouth down to our large intestine. 

Did you know if you spread out your intestines, its surface area would cover a tennis court?   

Wow - that's a lot of area!

When spread out, our intestines cover a lot of ground and many important functions occur in this area of our body that we often don’t think about. 

Your gut controls absorption and digestion of nutrients, playing a large role in your health, weight, and brain function. 

Top 2 points about the gut:

  • It is where 80% of your immune system is located
  • 90% of your serotonin (the happy chemical!) is produced 

This means your gut, or microbiome, impacts your brain, mood, and overall health.

What is leaky gut?

Think of your gut lining as a flexible wall with tiny holes to let only appropriate things through.

However, when we hurt the body with stress, toxins, chemicals and even medications, the tiny holes in our gut lining get too big that they begin to let other things, such as food and toxins through.

Therefore, the gut gets "leaky" as things slip through!

This is a problem because it creates inflammation in the body. 

Symptoms of chronic inflammation can be seen as:

  • acne 
  • weight gain
  • IBS
  • brain fog
  • fatigue
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • bloating
  • headaches
  • pain 

just to name a few.

5 Easy Ways to Boost Your Gut Health are: 

1) Cut out processed and packaged foods.

  • These contain many ingredients (that you can't pronounce) that cause overgrowth of bad bacteria in the gut.
  • All the additives can cause our liver to get sluggish and not process toxins as well during our detoxification process. 
  • Sticking to whole foods that come from the earth is a great way to improve your microbiome's health. 

2) Add in prebiotic and probiotic foods 

  • Prebiotics create the healthy habitat for our probiotics to flourish! 
  • Probiotics are healthy bacteria that improve the health of our gut and microbiome. These allow us to boost our immune system, improve our brain health, and have an improved mood!

3) Include bone broth during your week to help heal leaky gut. 

  • Bone broth contains collagen, which is a healing food for our gut lining. 
  • It also contains healthy amino acids (such as L-glutamine) that are building blocks for not only your gut lining, but also for healthy muscles, skin, and your energy! 

4) Drink at least half your weight in ounces of water each day. 

  • Many of us are dehydrated daily.
  • This stops us from eliminating toxins and can lead to weight gain, constipation, and disease. 
  • Carry a water bottle to help you remember to drink water throughout your day. 

5) Walk at least 20 minutes per day. 

  • Walking helps us get our blood moving, improve our circulation, and gets our lymphatic systems flowing.
